Subject: Administrivia - Pruning the Mailing List
I found out the hard way last night that the Info-IBMPC Digest mailing
list has a finite length. And that length is much shorter than the
list is long.
To solve the problem, I've moved all the addees of this message from
the Main list to the BITNET list.
What this means for you is that instead of the Digest coming from
WSMR-SIMTEL20.army.mil directly, it'll come from the BITNET host that
is nearest topologically on the net to your host.
Regret the switch, but ...
Regards,
Gregory Hicks

Subject: Advice on a company
I am looking to purchase a factory refurbished or rebuilt 486 unit from
Tredex corp., in California.
Has anyone dealt with this company before?
What kind of reliability have you had with their products, and did
their 10-day guarantee help if necessary? Do they have good customer
service?
Thanks for your advice.

Subject: Calendar/scheduling program needed
Hello:
I need to get a program that will allow us to print out dates and
reminders associated with those dates (staff absences, deadlines,
meetings and the like). A calendar page format would be best, but
other formats would be okay if this is not possible. We just want to
avoid a straight list from a word processor. Freeware/shareware is
preferred.
Haven't had much luck poking around on the net for such a program.
Don't think I'm finding the right directories. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,

Subject: IBM LAN server
I have a token ring network running PC LAN program 1.3 (PCLP) with 6
PC'S on the ring.
I am buying a new server a 486/66 with a 400MB SCSI hard drive. I am
also buying a bridge to connect the department LAN to the campus
backbone token ring. Now, money is the biggest constraint for this
upgrade and would like to spend just enough to achieve maximum
performance (sounds idealistic!!)
Here are a few questions I have:
1. Can I stay with PCLP or go to IBM LAN server? I have an application
in windows 3.1which I want to give e'body access to on the backbone
(hence the bridge), can I do it with PCLP? can non PCLP users on other
token rings also on the backbone be able to acess the app.
2. Will I need IBM LAN server with DOS LAN requesters to do the same?
3. Does IBM LAn server require OS/2 or can it run on DOS?
4. If IBM LAN server is installed on the server will PCLP clients
access shared resources or do I have to have DOS lan requestors?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Please e-mail me directly.

I am trying to get some advice on OCR scanning packages. I would like

well for them. I am considering TypeReader from ExperVision based on

Subject: Print device changing problems
I just pulled a really nice device driver off the Usenet source code
CD. It creates a device which converts text to postscript. It catches
I/O to lpt1 and runs it through a postscript filter.
The "virtual" devices are
prnpost
prnpost2 ( 2 column )
prnpost4 ( 4 column )
prnland ( landscape )
prnland2 ( landscape 2 column )
prnland4 ( landscape 4 column )
I use it like so..
mode lpt1:=com2: <cr>
print blah blah <cr>
which device [prn]? landscape < cr>
Now here is the rub.
If I want to change the device using the /D option as is shown
in the help for DOS 5.0, it tells me that the parameter /D is illegal
or not recognized. None of the other command line switches seem to work
either. I checked print.exe with my DOS version of strings and it
seems to be the correct DOS 5.0 version.
As an side note. Has anyone considered creating a what clone for DOS.
What is a unix program that looks in the executeable for a special tag
"@(#)" which is usually followed by a version number...
"@(#) V 1.1 "
The source code that was used to create the executeable usually
contains:
static char *rccsid = "@(#) V1.1";
Anyway what can be used in shell scripts ( .bat files ), initialization
files ( .ini ) , etc. you get the picture.
This sure would aleviate the problem of version control under DOS. I'm
still not sure that I have all the correct (current) .sys files
(emm386.exe, etc.). The dates are fine but if something "touches"
(changes the date) then the only way is compare filesizes.
Bill are you listening??

OAK.Oakland.Edu is a mirror of WSMR-SIMTEL20.Army.Mil. It runs the
Ultrix (Unix) operating system, SIMTEL20 runs TOPS-20 - therefore the
directory structure is slightly different. If you are looking for
MS-DOS files, cd to /pub/msdos and you will find all the directories
listed in the SIMTEL20 upload announcements. Disregard the PD1: part.
That's the SIMTEL20 disk drive name, like the C: drive on your PC.
PD1:<MSDOS.FILEDOCS>SIMLIST.ZIP is the complete index of the msdos
files. /pub/msdos/filedocs/simlist.zip is the path and the name on
OAK.
Notice the direct relationship of the SIMTEL20 to the OAK path.

Subject: RS422 to RS232
Does anyone have information on the conversion of RS422 serial signals
to IBM PC compatible RS232 signals (and voltages)? The device I have
is a card reader that has a phone jack on the back in which the two
outer wires (black, yellow) are the active wires. I wish to interface
this with my IBM and an old Apple IIe.
Are there any simple (comparator, logic, etc.) which will convert RS422
to RS232?
Thank you,

I am looking for recommendations for a system/box with speech

Subject: Stats Package and Round Errors(?)
I am using a statistical package called Minitab (v.6.01) and came
across this problem.
When I crunch the data with Clone A, I get
R-sq = 0.989 and Durbin-Watson = 0.08.
When I crunch the same data with Clone B, I get
R-sq = 0.988 and Durbin-Watson = 0.06.
It does not affect my results (as yet) but I wonder if anyone can
account for the differences. I think the R-sq difference is minor but
the Durbin-Watson difference seems large.

Subject: word and RTF format (line length) problem
i have a problem with word, and maybe somebody can help me.
we want to transfer wor files via email.
RTF is a format which word can write containing only ASCII characters
and therefore transferrable via normal email BUT Winword writes ASCII
files with lines longer than 80 characters. now some mailers
(especially on IBM mainframes) truncate mail files with line sthat
long. is there a trick which can be taught to winword not to make the
lines too long?
Or is there a utility splitting long lines in RTF file still producing
legal RTF file. just trying to introduce line breaks a spaces does NOT
work.
